    • Congress vs Session A “Congress” is a two-year term of activity, starting in the year after an election year. Many things in Congress reset after each two year term, such as bill numbers. In GovTrack, each "Congress" is made up of two "sessions" which follow the calendar years. So the 112th Congress (congress = 112) roughly covers the period 2011-2012, although technically the Congress usually starts a few days into January of the first year and extends a few days into January of the year following the last full year of the Congress. For the 112th Congress, it is then possible to specify session=2011 or session=2012. In historical data the sessions may be named in completely other ways, such as with letters A,B, and C.
    • Bill All Bills originating in the House of Representatives begin with "H.R." and all bills originating from the Senate begin with an "S". Every two years, at the start of odd-numbered years, the United States Congress recommences numbering from 1. This means that two different bills can have the same number. The types of bills possible are: House Resolution, Senate Bill, Senate Joint Resolution, House Bill, House Concurrent Resolution, Senate Concurrent Resolution, House Joint Resolution, and Senate Resolution.
